“When I met him, I was quite impressed because Prof Wang is very skillful and teaches his students patiently, and his work is very great. I hope in the future, the world will spread and teach more of his methods in chest wall surgery all around the world,” wrote Dr. Ivan Joalsen Mangara Tua from Indonesia in his farewell letter.
On October 22, 2024, a group of thoracic surgeons from Indonesia, the UK, and Greece—Dr. Ivan Joalsen Mangara Tua, Dr. Joyce Thekkudan, and Dr. Michael Klimatsidas—along with anesthesiologist Dr. Tias Diah Setiar, visited the Institution of Chest Wall Surgery (ICWS) of Guangdong Provincial Second General Hospital for an exchange visit.

During the visit, the doctors observed six corrective surgeries for different chest wall deformities, including pectus excavatum (PE), asymmetric PE, secondary PE and complex chest wall deformities. In the surgery involving a 3-year-old patient with complex chest wall deformities, Dr. Wenlin Wang utilized the Wang procedure he invented. What sets this technique apart is its ability to effectively protect the heart while enhancing correction and minimizing risks. Additionally, since its operating principle is completely different from that of the Nuss procedure, the Wang procedure is particularly suitable for young patients under 5 years old. “ I was quite impressed! Dr.Wang performed complex chest wall surgery so easily,” remarked Dr. Joyce Thekkudan after the surgery:“I am really looking forward to more learning opportunities in the future and collaborating with Dr. Wang.” Afterwards, Dr. Wang hosted a lecture, providing an in-depth introduction to the various types of diseases addressed in chest wall surgery and sharing some of the most challenging cases he has tackled in recent years.

Earlier, in August, four doctors from Canada, India, Thailand, and Turkey came with the same enthusiasm for exchange and learning, hoping to engage in in-depth discussions with Dr. Wang about the latest advancements in chest wall surgery. These exchange activities have not only deepened international professional connections but also opened a window for participating doctors to explore cutting-edge techniques in chest wall surgery. We look forward to more such opportunities in the future, working together to drive innovation and development in chest wall surgery and ultimately providing safer, more effective treatment options for patients worldwide.
