The Institute of Chest Wall Surgery

Surgery for A 15-Year-Old Adolescent with Severe Pectus Carinatum

Medical History

The patient is a 15-year-old teenage boy who has had severe pectus carinatum since childhood. Despite trying various methods to correct the deformity, such as taking calcium and cod liver oil supplements, and actively participating in sports, none of these have worked.

Preoperative Examination

The anterior chest wall was significantly protruded, with a slight depression on the lower half of the chest wall.

Surgical Overview

First, a 2 cm incision was made on each side of the chest wall, and three support bars were inserted. Two of the bars were placed on the protruding bone structures to correct the pectus carinatum with the Wenlin procedure, while the third bar was positioned inside the chest cavity to address the depression using the Wung procedure. After the surgery, the patient’s chest deformity was corrected, and the chest wall’s appearance returned to normal.
